So its the beginning of a new school year and we feel its time to have a little chat about Facebook. Our stand is that it is really not appropriate to be Facebook friends with your child’s caregiver/teacher. To some of you the reasons may be obvious and yet others may be wondering well whats the harm?
Lets think about it, if a staff member of your child’s daycare gets on and starts rambling about what an awful day they had at work, you may start to ask yourself all kinds of questions like “so were they mean to my child?” or ” was my kid the one they were angry at?” and so on and so on. Also lets face it people dont always use common sense and filter what is being said and things are put out there that shouldn’t be.
We heard a story about a teacher who had written that she had beeen drinking and would be going to work drunk.Really now? One of the parents at the center where she worked saw this and immediately called the director to let her know of the situation. The teacher was brought in to the office and was fired that day. As a direct result of this event the director sent a letter out to all parents and staff requesting that they no longer friend one another on Facebook as she didn’t feel it was professional. A very wise decision! Sometimes even staff who are “friends” on this social network can cause tension among themselves at work. But that’s another isssue.
We feel that taking care of your child is such an important and personal isssue, why not just talk to each other face to face.
